Tom ford's 10 Grooming Commandments

Tom Ford's 10 Grooming Commandments

There's a reason Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, and Brad Pitt all turn to one man when it's time to suit up: Tom Ford has the art of elevated style down to a science. To truly put Tom's skills to the test, we found five regular Londoners and ran them through the Tom Ford movie-star-making machine. Then we persuaded Tom to let us publish all his secret formulas so that you can use them, too

One of Ford's biggest beefs with modern men is our insistence on "comfort" as a cop-out for not fulfilling our style potential.
When we introduced Tom Ford to the five regular British blokes on these pages, he immediately asked them one question: "Where do you see yourself in ten years?" Then he dressed each man for his future, right then and there.
"There's a different kind of comfort that comes from knowing that you are putting your best foot forward," Ford says. "It's called psychological comfort. Look at a picture of the Coney Island boardwalk in 1925. Men were in full-on three-piece suits, hats. They may have only had one suit. But they pressed it. They made it look as good as possible. People aspired up."
And if there's one thing Ford represents, it's aspiration. But what's a man to do if the clothes he sees here are out of reach—if he can't afford Ford? "There are less expensive versions of everything that we're proposing here," T.F. says. He means smart clothes that don't necessarily have his name sewn inside but do make you feel like you can kick ass and close deals. Just remember to shout-out Tom when you make your first million.

Toby Watkins
Occupation: Wholesale Garment Salesman
Age: 24
Before: Just another slouchy post-college kid
After: The most polished man in any room
First of All, Know Thyself.
"Stand in the mirror and look at yourself," Ford says. "There are so many things to think about." The first thing Tom looks at? Your natural color. Toby has dark skin, so rich brown tones look best on him. That's how Ford chose his suit: "What works with your skin and eyes? Use that to zero in on your wardrobe."

 Lee Ha
Age: 29
Occupation: Accountant
Before: The businessman who looks too young to trust
After: The hotshot you need on your team
It's Not a Suit, It's a Cover Letter
First, Ford called in master hairstylist Oribe to get the childish bangs off Lee's face. "Your hair should be tailored," Oribe says. "That alone will give you the look of success." Tom's next step was a traditional, very tapered pinstriped suit that made Lee look like a pro the moment he threw it on.
"Banking types should take their cue from Gordon Gekko. Or pick the best-looking banker in their firm and copy him."—Tom Ford

Konrad Rusiecki
Age: 30
Occupation: Builder
Before: Another guy who let hip-hop pass him by

After: The man who doesn't follow trends—he leads
Who Are You Hiding From?
Konrad is a builder and dresses like one on and off the clock. But lurking beneath the 4XL gear is a man who's intensely handsome. And even though no aspect of Konrad's current life calls for a tailored suit, every man needs a little tailoring. In Konrad's case, Ford reached for a slim sweater combo and a statement-piece topcoat that made Konrad look, more than anything, like a builder of empires.
"Konrad said that hip-hop was his biggest style influence, but as you know from Jay Z, the hip-hop world is wearing Tom Ford."—Tom Ford

Dave Voyle
Age: 30
Occupation: Recruitment Manager
Before: The guy who works hard to not get noticed

After: The man who works hard and plays harder
Don't Be Afraid of Your Own Sex Appeal
News flash: Putting on a suit that's too big is worse than not putting on a suit at all. So Tom helped Dave find his inner international playboy with an M65 jacket and dark jeans. Ford also insists on a buttoned jacket—it gives you a trim waist. "When Dave saw his ‘after' picture," Ford tells us, "he said, ‘Wow, I look really handsome.' I hope that confidence will carry into his life. That's the most exciting thing about this process."
"What's so wrong with vanity? It's different from narcissism, you know? It's not about admiring yourself—it's about taking pride in your appearance."—Tom Ford

Clothes alone don't make the man. Skin and hair are just as important. Which is why Tom and his team of luxe whizzes have created a new line of top-shelf grooming products, out this month. But before you rush to the store, memorize Ford's master grooming guidelines.
10. "No need for deodorant. I like the way sweat smells. It's sexy."
9. "I don't eat onions or garlic. Ever. Fresh breath is important."
8. "But never chew gum in public."
7. "Get a pedicure."
6. "Use cold packets to get rid of eye puffiness."
5. "Like white teeth, white eyes matter. Use Visine."
4. "Want girls to let you put your fingers in certain places? Get a manicure."
3. "Even with a soft jaw, when you trim your beard well, you'll look sharp and chiseled."
2. "Spray cologne all over."
1. "I personally hate shaved genitals, but ask your partner what he or she prefers." - Tom Ford said.
